Check dimensions, fix the mesh, and orient your model before printing — a practical checklist for preparing STL files that print cleanly the first time.
A clean STL file is the difference between a perfect print and a failed one. Before you send a model to print — or to a service like True Form Labs — run through this checklist.
Check the scale
STL files have no units, so make sure your model is sized in millimetres and matches the real-world dimensions you want. Compare it against your printer's (or our) build volume: 220 × 220 × 240 mm.
Repair the mesh
Holes, inverted normals, and non-manifold edges cause slicing problems. Most slicers and free tools like Microsoft 3D Builder can auto-repair these in one click.
Orient for success
Flat, stable faces down minimise supports. Avoid overhangs steeper than 45 degrees, and remember that holes printed horizontally can need supports unless they are small.
Simplify where you can
Huge polygon counts slow slicing and printing without visible benefit. Reduce the mesh so details survive at your print layer height — usually that is plenty.
